Human rights are the cornerstone of a just and equitable society, and law enforcement agencies play a crucial role in upholding these rights. At Zanmi Lapolis, we are deeply committed to promoting human rights and the rule of law within Haiti’s law enforcement institutions.
Our commitment extends to ensuring that all law enforcement activities are carried out in strict compliance with international human rights law and standards. To this end, we have instituted various programs and policies designed to embed respect for human rights within the Haitian National Police.
A key part of our approach is education and training. We provide extensive human rights training to law enforcement officers, helping them understand the importance of human rights in their work and how to uphold these rights in the course of their duties.
Moreover, we emphasize the importance of treating all individuals – including suspects, detainees, and prisoners – with dignity and respect. This extends to advocating for the rights of inmates and ensuring fair treatment throughout the justice process.
In addition to education and advocacy, we work towards institutional change. We are actively involved in developing policies and procedures that align with international human rights standards. This includes measures to ensure accountability and transparency, which are crucial for building public trust in law enforcement.
